Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Instilling a love of science in early childhood is key to loving to learn. Children are naturally intrigued by all sciences and I have the opportunity to inspire them!

Many of my students are English learners and it is difficult to coax them into talking out loud.

I also have three selected mutes who have barely said 3 sentences to me since the start of the year. We recently studied penguins and they were awe-struck! Insects and plants are coming up soon and I'd LOVE to be able to get them more involved and excited! I'm expecting that they will be so excited that they won't be able to stay quiet! I teach 5 year olds and they are thirsty to learn. I want so badly to be able to give them ample scientific experiences and exposure while they are impressionable.

My Project

Because our program is new, I do not currently have a science curriculum, which means no science materials. These items would be a great start to a science "lab" where they can explore and make observations as well as use key vocabulary. I have already purchased a large sensory bin and some fillers, but we do not have any science materials to truly explore them beyond the basic physical characteristics. Students will have to articulate what they are observing through the use of these tools.

My students are active and energetic and the ability to teach them through physical activity rather than worksheets would be truly beneficial for them!

Many of these materials can be used in multiple areas of science. There are many ways to incorporate science into reading, writing and math; but looking at science in a book is not nearly as interesting as doing it in real life!
