My Students

My middle school is categorized as one of the lower performing schools in the county and is in need of extra support and assistance for our students, who all experience high levels of poverty, violence, and educational inequity.

The majority of my students will either be the first or in the first generation of their families to attend college.

Statistically, African Americans, boys, and students whose parents had less education were more likely to be suspended or expelled. Students who prepared more for their classes, spent more hours on homework, and aspired to higher academic achievement were less likely to be disciplined at school. Helping students engage in school may be protective against disproportionate school discipline. Only 27% of them will graduate college within four years (compared to 42% of students whose parents graduated from college). But not our students—we all aspire to go to college.

My Project

My school doesn't allow color printing and my students have to share any black-and-white prints that are made. It has been proven that students that annotate are more engaged, students that have a hard copy for themselves are more likely to remember the information, and students that are more engaged make better grades.

High-quality color can spark their imaginations and facilitate the brainstorming process that's essential to creative projects and student engagement.

High-quality color printing increases student engagement, enhances their educational experience, and makes learning accessible for students with disabilities. Color can especially help students interpret and understand charts and graphs, and it aids in the retention of material covered in class. High-quality color printing can support tremendous creativity and innovation in the classroom. Color is naturally engaging for all learners. Color printing can be transformational for students with learning disabilities, such as dyslexia or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
