My project needs an earth model, rock and mineral samples, a magnet ring set, an electricity kit, a volcano model, weather and human body hands-on activities, a global animal puzzle, measuring tools, a platform scale, a scale with masses, and graduated beakers.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fourth grade students beg for science! I am a teacher in a Title One school in Union County. Our science curriculum is delivered to us on specific dates in a specific order of topics. My students in the past have expressed a desire for more science than I have been able to offer. I feel if they have a desire to learn I need to provide the opportunity.
I have decided to create "Science in a Box" to use in a center in my classroom. I have gathered together literature, non-fiction texts, posters, and experiments for each box. The boxes are put together by subject matter such as; magnetism, electricity, animals, weather, volcanoes, etc.
The need I have is for hands-on materials: I need a model for the Earth Box and rocks and mineral specimens are needed for the Rocks and Minerals Box. Materials are needed for successful experiments with magnetism and electricity. The weather and climate lab I have requested will complete my Weather Box. The human body lab kit will provide experiments for the Body Box. A global animal puzzle will increase awareness of endangered animals and their geographic location. I also need measuring tools such as scales and beakers for experiments.
In the center the students will be doing work across the curriculum as they read information, question and perform experiments, write responses, and document and analyze data. They won't realize they are reading, writing, and solving math equations. They will just know they got their wish for more science!
