Science for Our Future

My students need a wastewater test kit, a soil test kit, and at least two bacterial pollution test kits for their water and soil pollution projects.

My Students

My students are very excited when they come to class. I expect my students to have the science skills pursue a career in science but I do not have the supplies for their experiments. "Did you drink water today?" Water is essential to all life and in some places it is very polluted and unhealthy.

I teach in a 6-12 school in New York City.

Over 90% of our student population receives free lunch. Many of my students travel over 90 minutes to have a free breakfast to start their day. The students, though highly economically disadvantaged, are always in school and on-time. They are always eager to learn through reading, demonstrations, and hands-on activities (their favorite). My school pushes us to provide the students will valuable literacy, technical, and lab skills to have our students pursue a career in STEM. We do everything we can but with limited supplies the students cannot conduct hands-on experiments and are missing the connections made through exploratory learning. Since we are a 6-12 school, it is our obligation and responsibility to ensure every middle school student has the science skill set to perform in their high school science classes if they move onto other high schools.

My Project

The students will be using the waste water test kits to explore what chemicals and pollutants are found in our waters and soils. We will test waste water samples, pond water, tap water, and school fountain water to test and analyze the pollutants. The students will research the possible causes of these contaminants and their effects on biodiversity in the rivers and ponds. They will also research the harmful effects of drinking polluted water for humans. The students will analyze soil samples from our school garden, a nearby park, and a nearby pond. The students will research the effects of these chemical and pollutants on plant life and invertebrates living in the soil. The students will cap the project with their hands-on experiment of culturing bacteria and understanding how pollution can aid the growth of microbes.

These materials will provide the students with hands-on learning that they will not be exposed to.

The students will actually perform and analyze the water test samples, the soil samples, and the growth and culture of bacteria. For many students these activities will never come true even in their high schools. When I have the materials available for hands-on activities the students will showcase their inquiry and experimenting skills. They will stay in the class even when the bell has rung.
