I teach in a Title I school in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school district in Charlotte, North Carolina. Every day our students walk through the door, every single adult tells them they are the best; getting them to believe that is no easy feat. Over 42% of our student population are considered economically disadvantaged.
But we don’t let those statistics define our kids.
I know our kids are brilliant, curious, and kind. I know they have big goals and work hard to achieve them. Its our job to provide them with practical life skills to help them become whatever they want to be!
My Project
8th grade is critical year for science. Not only do our students take the End of Grade (EOG) assessment here in North Carolina, but they are also on their way to high school, beginning to think about college, and looking into careers in STEM.
With these materials, I would be able to capture the attention of my students by providing content in a creative and innovative way.
I want to incorporate hands-on learning, engaging science comic books, and flexible seating for my students to have comfortability while engaging with our material. I'm requesting Big Joe Bean Bag Chairs, metal stack stools, and foam chair pads for flexible seating choice. We also need an Essential Oil Diffuser, kitchen timer, masking tape, and pencils.
I want to reach all students, especially those not initially interested in STEM, and I know I need to meet them where they are. I envision my classroom to be a fun and diverse setting where all my students flourish into scientists and thrive passionately.
I want my students to develop in a space where they are comfortable being in a classroom for 90 minutes at a time. A space where different types of science books spark curiosity and evoke scientific inquiries from students who didn’t think they would ever even enjoy science. A space where my students understand that being scientists means being creative and engaged. And, a space where my students of color and female students feel empowered and confident in their abilities to dive into the STEM world.
With your donation, I envision this classroom coming to life!
