My Students
Why don't kids read more? They haven't been exposed to some of the best and coolest stories out there! Literacy isn't just about reading the classics; it's about reading a lot and loving what you read.
Our students are nerds.
They're good at math and our high school focuses them towards the sciences. But like most kids, they don't find the textbooks inspirational. Remember Star Wars? Or Star Trek? How about 2001, or The Martian Chronicles? Some of the most prominent scientific and technical minds of our time were inspired by what these stories predicted science and scientists will bring to our future. We want our students excited about science and reading more, too!
My Project
With an excellent Science Fiction lending library, students don't have to seek out access to great books because they're already there. We can have reading circles, discussion groups and promote discovery, curiosity, science and literacy. There are significant possibilities for extracurricular and elective clubs and classes once the actual library of books is in place. Not only that, but we want them turning off the TV and turned on to a great book!
The future scientists come from schools like ours.
Just like the today's NASA scientists engineers and technicians saw Star Wars or read Asimov and thought, "Wow, that would be great one day!", we hope to inspire the next generation of inventors, scientists, explorers, doctors and policymakers that not only is current-day science exciting and relevant, but the science we have yet to discover and exploit can catapult us eons beyond where we've dreamed possible.
