Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school serves 4th-6th graders in Southeast Los Angeles. We believe that all students are capable of great academic achievements- including the completion of a rigorous college preparatory high school education and success at the colleges of their choice. In the context of South Gate and the surrounding Southeast Cities, our mission is the
transformation of the lives of students and their families through an education that prepares them for higher education and professional careers.
All of my students receive free lunch. 98% of our students are Latino/Hispanic.
My Project
We are participating in our second annual Science Fair at my school. I have asked for science fair presentation boards for my students. Being able to be a part of a science fair will give my students a deeper love for science as well as a deeper understanding of the scientific method. We will have a community night when families and community members will be invited in to see the science fair. My students will practice applying the scientific method to a project of their choice and orally present their findings at the science fair. Providing my students with a Tri-Fold Science poster will help out my students families to alleviate some financial need. Hispanics are underrepresented in undergraduate and graduate STEM programs and are not sufficiently exposed to STEM subjects at the K-12 Levels. This science fair project will expose my students to STEM investigations.
