My Students

Science is fascinating. Through hands-on experiments and scientific inquiry, students can learn more about the world around them. Nothing brings the subject to life more than a science fair, where students can develop their own experiments and present their learning, and even compete with others!

My students are energetic, fascinating, and eager to learn.

I am a sixth year teacher in a K to 8 urban, public school. We serve a student population that is 98% African American and 2% Anglo-American. 86.3% of the student population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, and about 10% receive Special Education Services. I myself am a Special Education Teacher, providing Learning Support services to students in grades 4 through 8. It is a high needs area of instruction in a high needs school. As a special education teacher, I am responsible for students who have learning disabilities, and I provide them academic support for reading and math. Both literacy and math skills are needed during science, so it can sometimes be a challenging subject for my kids. But this does not keep my children from thoroughly enjoying science class - it's exciting and interactive! For students who often find school frustrating, science is something fun and informative, where they can feel successful.

My Project

Though my students have enthusiasm for science, this is not enough. I teach in a school where resources are sometimes scare and science tends to fall by the wayside, when such an emphasis is placed on standardized testing in reading and math. Yet, science can help students develop their critical thinking skills - especially if they are designing and performing their own experiments for a Science Fair they are invested in. I want my students to be able to do this. This is why we need help from generous people like you! There is a city-wide Science Fair that I want my students to be able to compete in - but to do so, they need the tri-fold presentation boards that are required. I think this is especially important for the special needs students with whom I work. They deserve access to the same materials and experiences as the regular education students at my school, and other students in other school districts who might get supplies more easily.

So, please help us make our dream of having a Science Fair at our school a reality.

Our students will enjoy creating their own projects and learn more about the scientific method while doing so. This will help them with their critical thinking and problem solving skills, which in turn will help them be more successful in the future. We want to be able to compete in the city's Science Fair. This would be a great learning experience, and you can make it possible for my children! Thank you.
