My Students

Most of my students I have watched grow since kindergarten. They come to me each week for art and a chance to take a break from the rigor of the regular classroom. They have struggles and challenges in their lives, but they are able to leave them behind when they enter my art room to create. They look forward to the projects and are excited to take their work back home. It makes me smile to know that I can help them use their artistic talents to find an outlet to everyday life.

My Project

My project will provide needed supplies and opportunities for the children in our school and show them that science and math is everywhere around them....even in the art room. My students need an laptop computer to assist them with this "Science Environmental" project. I want my students to be able to learn about science through hands-on experiences in all subjects. The students will use this at home to create this project. I want my students to have these experiences and love learning. I will use sustainable energy themed units with our science school programs. I teach a wonderful group of students!

Unfortunately, our school is located in a low income area with 100 percent of the students receiving free or reduced lunch.

Many of the students come from single parent families or families with only one parent working. Electricity is an integral part of our daily lives, but many energy sources are damaging the environment. I plan to have my students read about innovations in alternative energy sources. They will work in groups to design and build a model of a system to generate energy. Each group will then present their design to the class. Next, the students will create an alternative energy design at home with their family and keep data on energy used at home and ways to conserve energy. The instructional activity finishes with everyone discussing the importance of renewable energy resources and what they did at home with their family to conserve energy. In order to carry out this unit my students need a computer to research various energy sources and how they might design a system to sustain energy. This project will be used to discuss architectural designs and how changes have been made over the years to improve environmental sustainability in homes.
