Science Everywhere (Thank You, GM)

My students need a laptop and a carrying case to learn about alternative energy.

FULLY FUNDED! Teacher Benson's classroom raised $442

My Students

My students are bright and cheerful kindergarten through second graders who come to me each week for art. They know that learning is important, but they look forward to escaping academics in my classroom. I teach in an inner-city classroom where most of the families are from a low socio-economic background where they struggle to pay for necessities. Luxury items like art supplies fall way down the shopping list.

My students come in ready to do fun art projects and never realize all the learning they are doing while they are with me.

I get students who have never held scissors, do not know how to glue, and have only really drawn in their classroom. For some of my students, holding a pencil or a crayon is still a very new experience.

My Project

My project will provide needed supplies and opportunities for the children in our school and show them that science and math is everywhere around them....including the art room. My students need an laptop computer to assist them with this "Science Environmental" project that will be done in cooperation with the students classroom teachers. I want my students to be able to learn about science as well as art through hands-on experiences. The students will use this at home to create this project. I want my students to have these experiences and love learning. I will use sustainable energy themed units with our science school programs. I teach a wonderful group of student!

Unfortunately, our school is located in a low income area with 100 percent of the students receiving free or reduced lunch.

Many of the students come from single parent families or families with only one parent working.

Electricity is an integral part of our daily lives, but many energy sources are damaging the environment. I plan to have my students read about innovations in alternative energy sources, they will work in groups to design and build a model of a system to generate energy. Each group will then present their design to the class. Next, the students will create an alternative energy design at home with their family and keep data on energy used at home and ways to conserve energy. The instructional activity finishes with everyone discussing the importance of renewable energy resources and what they did at home with their family to conserve energy. In order to carry out this unit my students need a computer to research various energy sources and how they might design a system to sustain energy.
