Science Engagement Through Literacy

My students need literacy books to incorporate into science lessons and the hands on science materials/tools to go with them.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Sarver's classroom raised $394

My Students

My science classroom is unique in that I teach an entire school of approximately 950 elementary students. The students excitedly enter my classroom once a week for 40-45 minutes based on their grade level. I teach pre-K, the severely disabled and K-5.

Several times a day I get the joy of standing outside my classroom door and welcoming eager "spongelike" minds into my classroom.

In my 13 years of teaching, I have never felt so much joy. Not only am I teaching my FAVORITE subject, but my students are just as excited about science as I am. However, I want to keep that excitement alive so I am continuously trying to improve my teaching.

My Project

Most of us can think back to when we were children and remember a book that we loved. My goal is to incorporate some of these timeless classics into my science classroom. Why storybooks in science? Children's picture books have interesting story lines that can help students understand and remember concepts better than they would by using textbooks alone, which tend to present science as a list of facts to be memorized (Butzow and Butzow 2000). The children's books will be used to guide inquiry where the student's will be using their science notebooks to address questions, make hypotheses, create diagrams or charts, formulate explanations and justify their explanations during cooperative exploration activities. Of course, scientific materials/supplies are also needed for the cooperative exploration activities (labs). The science topics include: weather, living things, and fossils.

By funding this project I expect my students to: -Be more engaged thus improving their knowledge of science and literacy.

-Increase their scientific knowledge to prepare them for careers in science. -Raise their achievement levels in language arts and science end of grade tests (EOGs).
