What do YOU remember about middle school science? What will you help 225 brilliant and hard working scholars remember? We are the College Preparatory Science Learning Community. We are the class of 2018 and 2019 (the years we will graduate from college). We are at a high poverty middle school in NY, and we are looking for some exciting new hands on laboratory materials from a donor like you!

As a first year teacher in a young school, I am quickly discovering that students are brilliant yet science instruction has been limited in the past due to lack of resources. We have done our best to get creative in our experiments with the funds we have, but it is challenging to create hands on science experiences without real supplies. My scholars work so hard and are almost finished with the curriculum for their grade levels due to all of their extra studying! I recently conducted a survey asking them what they would like to further investigate with our remaining time together this year. The projects requested in this proposal are all taken from the results of the survey; these are projects that my scholars have come up with themselves. My scholars and I are so excited about these projects, but when investigating the cost of them we realized that the only way to make them possible was to turn to you for assistance!

By getting live butterflies and carnivorous plants in the classroom, students will be able to apply what we have learned about life science while also building a sense of responsibility by caring for another living thing. My 2019 scholars are excited about seeing a butterfly hatch, while my 2018 scholars can't wait to see how a Venus fly trap works! The crime scene investigation kit will boost the interest of the many students who are interested in careers in forensics. My scholars know that I like to come to class "in character" when we are doing something really exciting, and I'm thinking it would be fun to be a detective for the week! My scholars 2 favorite units so far have been "The Human Body" and "Chemistry". The body model will help scholars understand the body in a way that flat posters cannot, and will be wonderful for the future medical professionals in the classroom. The chemistry materials will allow us to continue our study of stoichiometry (11th grade balancing chemical equations). We are especially excited about this because we know that kids who pass high school chem are 3x more likely to go to college. These materials will give us a head start!

Creating hands on investigations with real science equipment will help my middle school scholars have a science experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives. My scholars have written that science is important because it helps solve problems in the world. They have written about their desire to find a cure for cancer and AIDS, to be surgeons and dermatologists, forensic anthropologists, and archaeologists. Please help them take the first step towards achieving their goals!
