Science Classroom Museum

My Science students need 17 classroom resources, including assorted environmental sciences analysis equipment, pulleys and scales and model/display building craft supplies, including a collage kit, felt and glue.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Moore's classroom raised $547

This project is fully funded

When at-risk middle grade students turn their classroom into a museum, they not only learn a lot of science, they learn that school is a place where they can accomplish something they are proud of. They learn that science can be fun. My 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students have all been long-term suspended from regular schools for behavioral infractions. They need a fresh start and fresh creative approaches to learning, not more of the traditional schooling they have already come to believe they can’t do.

Although the students we serve desperately need inquiry-oriented hands-on learning activities to succeed, our budget is almost non-existent for the supplies needed to support that kind of instruction. Students come to us throughout the year as they get into trouble in regular schools, and by the end of the year we may have enrolled 100 students. However, our funding is based on enrollment on the tenth day of school--when our enrollment is at or near zero. Thus, though our program is staffed with caring creative teachers, we lack the resources to create the types of learning environments our students really need.

And what these students need most are opportunities to experience success that we can build on. They need school work they will feel proud of and opportunities to show off cool work. For example, giving guided tours to visiting students from our adjoining high school and elementary school through the giant model of a cell, which they made by taping thin sheets of plastic into a huge bag (cell membrane) and inflating it with a large floor fan. Once they take visitors inside the membrane, our student docents will explain all about the forms and functions of the various cell organelles they have crafted from Styrofoam, pipe cleaners, beads, bobs, and found objects. Or how about providing demonstrations at the water testing lab? Or giving guided tours through time in the geology wing of the museum? The classroom-as-science museum will make learning meaningful, fun and give these students unprecedented opportunities to feel successful at “doing school.”

Importantly, the pride these students will feel will be genuine and well-earned. After all, no matter what part of the cell model you built, you have to understand all of it to give guided tours. Also, though these students may have built simple models and dioramas in school before, seldom have they had opportunities to work on something as huge as a model of a cell that fills half the classroom. It has been my experience that when students are given the opportunity to work towards an end product that can be "awesome" rather than "so lame" they rise to the occasion and do awesome work. This is awesome work both in terms of the content they learn and the creativity they apply in making a display of that learning. All we need to make it happen are a few basic science supplies and some arts and crafts materials.
