This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever seen a science library? The pictures and detailed information will get any kid looking for more. The easy to use index will allow the lower leveled students to work on their book reading skills.
I work in a high needs school, with a low - level population.
I teach in a 12:1:1 Special Education class with ESL and varying disabilities. My students are incredible and I want them to have access to as much information as any other student! They understand what politics are, and what budget cuts mean...but they also understand what it means to not have enough money to help the kids. I want them to have the access to books just like everyone else. Our school is quickly being taken over by Charter, and with less enrollment we get less money.
My Project
In order to comply with the state's 20 book minimum in science, we would in turn, need a science library. Students are sharing ripped pages, and worn down books, and as a second year teacher I would like to start a fresh collection of books that will help them complete the standards asked of them. Each book in the collection covers a different science topic. This will allow each student to have a CHOICE of what to read about, which they will then have to write about. Each student is required to read 20 books, but how can this happen if we don't have a science library??
My students, though in Special Education, should have access to the resources before anyone else.
They are already behind, so let's give them a head start, by supplying them with text that is leveled, but not difficult, and accessible in my classroom!!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
