Science Class But...Where Are the Labs and Supplies?!
My students need bunsen burners and thermometers for our science labs.

Middle school science = worksheets and worksheets only at our school.
I currently teach 6th grade Science in a low-income community in New York. The classrooms are extremely heterogeneous, ranging from "honors" students to those with IEPs.
While I remember 6th grade Science as being the most exciting class during middle school, I'm fairly certain my students last year did not share this sentiment. We have almost zero resources for Science meaning no labs, no experiments, no text books, no nothing. Most of their work came down to filling out worksheets I made for them and a mini-project here and there when I could come up with the money to buy a couple of supplies.
Middle school science is supposed to be hands-on! It should be a time of discovery and exploration - a class where all that pent up pre-teen energy can be used in an effective way. Many of the labs I wanted to try this year involved heating materials so Bunsen burners would be extremely helpful. We also do a very long unit on heat and energy so thermometers would also be used a lot.
Just a handful of burners and thermometers may seem trivial or not enough to really make a difference, but I can't even begin to describe how large of a difference these little things will make. I want Science class to be a time of eager expectancy and inspiration, instead of just worksheets sitting on my students' desks. Your help will mean the world to my kids, even if they never have the chance to thank you in person!
