I teach first grade in a new, dual language program in Brooklyn. My students need science Spanish books for our classroom library. Our dual language program is just two years old and we are still building up our classroom library
I have 25, first graders who love to read in English and Spanish.
In our school, 57% of the students receive free or reduced price meals. My students come from very diverse backgrounds. They love science and enjoy participating in literacy activities.
My Project
Literacy is connected to all of our content areas. My first graders will be studying about animal diversity, matter, weather, and the seasons. Unfortunately, getting the right books in Spanish is a big challenge. For this year, I would like to have books about animals, ecosystems, and different states of matter. My students read at different levels so I need books that are at each student's level to be able to scaffold their learning
In order for my first graders to learn science vocabulary in Spanish, I need books that support the curriculum.
Having these books will support our units of study and teach them to appreciate the world of learning that reading brings. By donating new books to our classroom, you are also helping me to incorporate literacy across the curriculum and create a literacy rich environment.
