Science and Social Studies Center for Bilingual First Graders

My students need STEM stations, a "Then and Now" instant learning center, and a "Map my Town" center.

My Students

I have twenty-eight first graders who love to read in English and Spanish. In our school, fifty percent of the students receive free or reduced-price meals. My students have very diverse backgrounds and come together to form a wonderful community.

My first graders enjoy participating in literacy activities and they are eager writers and readers.

They love creating stories in both languages and learning new math concepts. They are eager scientists and they are always interested in learning and sharing their cultures.

My Project

I need a set of science centers so my students can explore magnetism, motion, and buoyancy—as they complete hands-on experiments and engineering activities.

In first grade, our social studies units focus on our own community.

I would like to have a "Map my Town" learning center so my first graders can develop skills in mapping, following directions, cardinal directions, positional words, and using a compass rose. The "Then and Now" center will put historical concepts right at my students' fingertips. It has illustrated instruction charts and hands-on materials so my first graders can work at their own pace to discover fascinating historical facts.
