Science and Robots and Learning, Oh My! - Robots in Rural AK
My students need this LEGO Mindstorms kit so that they can have fun while learning about robotics!
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Luke's classroom raised $460
This project is fully funded
My Students
We make learning fun and every student works at their own pace within their own level.
We don't have "grades" based on age - instead each student works at their own ability level and moves on when they show mastery of each standard within that level. It is project-based learning at its finest!
Our school district (and our school) is small and all of our classrooms have mixed-ages.
I teach a small group of students ranging from 4th grade up through 7th grade.
I want to help prepare these Native Alaskan children to live in both of the worlds that they find themselves growing up in - their traditional world and the "modernized" one.
None of our district's villages are connected to anything by roads - you must fly in or take a boat to each village. Only a few years ago did our villages get access to cell phones - before that there simply wasn't any service or providers in the rural communities. A lot has changed over the past 5 years and I think many things will continue to change.
The people here are some of the most caring and giving individuals I have ever met. The community of about 100 people really comes together and supports one another whenever times are difficult - you don't see that too much anymore.
This is a very special place to live and work and I love it here!
My Project
Students will use these materials both during and after school time.
We will be learning about robotics with this kit and we plan to enter into various competitions with our designs.
After creating some designs as a whole group, each student will get a set amount of time to design their own robot and make it do a specific task. The student will present their design to the rest of the school and talk about the process from beginning to end.
In this way, I believe the entire school can get involved (which is about 25 kids total)!
This project will make a difference because I believe that analytical thinking and problem solving are applicable across all disciplines.
In addition, I feel that technology and, more specifically, robotics, are going to be a big part of the future. It's difficult sometimes to find supplies that are of high-interest, academically rigorous, and easy to implement all at the same time. I think this kit will do all of that for our classroom and, hopefully, the rest of the school.
