Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach math and science at a school in a very poor area of the inner South Bronx. I would love to expose the students to more of the world and help them see how math and science impact their daily lives.
One way to do this is to show them movies. Sadly, we do not have a TV/DVD player. I know that combining math and science lessons through this medium will have life-long effects. Students will become engaged and enthusiastic by seeing how much science and math are needed and used in daily life.
We want to show the students a lesson about Tsunamis. By doing this, we will broaden their horizons. Students will be asked to research all about the topics, but then we will show them a film on the topic. The visual aid of a movie helps the bigger ideas sink in and also makes hard to grasp ideas easier to understand.
Also, we plan to show a selection of movies like STAND BY ME that show students how to maker better CHOICES in their lives.
