Science and Math Books To Motivate My Students!

My students need 48 new science and math books and a natural cork bulletin board.

My Students

This year I have a very active and engaged group of 6th graders who are CONSTANTLY asking deeper questions during science and math lessons. They need more books to quench their thirst for learning!

I teach 6th grade at a high poverty, Title I school that serves students in kindergarten through 8th grade.

About 85% of our students are on free and reduced price lunch, and we are incredibly diverse with over 30 languages spoken on our campus. Every year, I have so many different learning styles I need to accommodate, particularly ADHD and special education. I love to provide opportunities for hands-on learning, but with class sizes increasing and lack of funding, we don't have enough basic supplies.

My Project

I've taught science for several years and I have a ton of great materials that can be incorporated into my new math classes. We will be looking at how scientists and mathematicians problem-solve real life skills on a regular basis. I am requesting 48 new (and fun!) books about science and math to be used during specific lessons, and also for times like silent reading or research. My students also want to display their work, but believe it or not, we don't have ANY bulletin boards in the hallway and tape never seems to stick. With just one bulletin board, my students will be able to show the whole school what they are learning about.

Our students rely on the school for basic needs, such as breakfast/lunch, school supplies, and health care.

Because resources cover many basic needs, we are not able to purchase these classroom essentials. This year, my students will be starting fundamental units (Algebra, Geometry, Cellular Biology, and more) and the best way to get them motivated is to let them explore new and interesting books about those topics.
