Science And Literature Oh My!

My Students

Do you remember sitting in your middle school science class listening to your teacher drone on about facts and concepts that didn't connect to your life? The book, "Who Really Killed Cock Robin" is a fabulous environmental mystery that teaches science in an interesting way.

First and foremost, I have to admit that I have absolutely the most fabulous students in the country.

They are motivated to learn and have the capability of putting a smile on the face of anyone they come in contact with. Our school is extremely diverse with students ranging with multiple handicaps to performing in the 99th percentile on standardized tests, as well as performing in the 5th percentile. They come from many different countries, speaking many different languages and displaying many different cultures.

My Project

Part of the sixth grade science curriculum is the study of environmental sciences. Ecosystems, food chains, food webs, and the destruction of our planet are areas that are important for each student to learn. Since Literature is a focus in all content areas and due to the fact that I have a passion for reading, to connect the two would allow me to not only teach those science concepts, but to teach them through a quality piece of literature. The student will be able to solve an environmental mystery that shows a decline in an ecosystem. Through a series of clues, each student will learn just how an influx of one species can truly affect the entire community. They will be able to, in the end, find out Who Really Killed Cock Robin!

Placing a book in the hands of every child and sharing that passion for reading through another content area such as science, will show my students that science doesn't have to drone on with a series of facts, but can relate in the real world through environmental issues.
