Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Read, baby, read" is a chant that our students recite. However, when they read, they are mostly only doing this in reading class. With this subscription to "Science World" they will be able to also read in science class as well!

I teach at a charter school where my students attend school from 7:15 - 5 pm.

My school is a Title One school and in the 8th grade, we have about 90% of students on free or reduced lunch. My students are mostly English Language Learners who are still struggling to read on an eighth grade reading level. Additionally, according to their MAP scores, they struggle as a group on nonfiction texts. Therefore, this project will help them to grow in an area that they are weak. Additionally, the skills they will learn from reading these magazines will not only help them in middle school but also high school, college and beyond. The Post-it notes will serve as a tool in my classroom to help them visualize the graphic organizers they should be using while they read the magazines.

My Project

I am requesting class sizes of "Science World" so that my students will have the opportunity to read nonfiction texts and still keep up with recent science news. Our students struggle with comprehending and ascertaining main ideas from nonfiction pieces. Therefore, the more opportunities they have to read nonfiction, the better they will become. Additionally the Post-it notes will help them visualize the tools they should be using while reading nonfiction text.

This project is important because literacy is what creates the educational gap we see amongst my community.

Therefore, I believe it is my duty to not only become a science teacher, but also a reading teacher for my students.
