Science And Literacy Are Out Of This World!

My students need the book "The Martian" by Andy Weir to increase literacy and motivate them to read about science. Many of my students cannot afford to purchase these books on their own.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Stout's classroom raised $666

My Students

My students come from various backgrounds and income levels. Their families range from parents who are professionals such as doctors and lawyers to parents who are struggling to make ends meet. They have chosen to take honors Earth and Space Science not necessarily because of their intellect but because of their interest in science.

Providing high interest text related to science will improve not only knowledge of science topics but literacy.

Not every student in the class can afford to buy books so funding this project will help me to provide them without embarrassment to those who can't afford them.

My Project

I want my students to develop a keen eye for the difference between science fact and science fiction. We will read and write about the engineering and science challenges and reflect on how they may apply to challenges in our lives. In addition, reading this book will support what we are learning about space and space exploration. I want to use this text to encourage students to think critically about what they read and do research to help them decide if they are indeed plausible. I hope our studies may even inspire them to one day become involved in an engineering or space-related career.

My students are excited to begin reading about the mission to Mars and the ingenuity of Mark Watney on his quest to stay alive.

Hopefully his resourcefulness and determination will be an inspiration to them as they grow and make their way on our own planet!
