Science and FACS Department: Ice Machine Wanted

Help me give my students An ice machine. This will be used for our science labs and within our Family and Consumer Science classes. We have approximately 1600 students in our school who will benefit from having this.

My Project

Our high school, a low-income school, seeks to acquire and install a modern ice machine for our Science and Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) labs. This essential equipment will enhance hands-on learning, support critical laboratory procedures, and provide a professional environment for students. Current manual ice production is inefficient and insufficient, hindering our robust curriculum and further challenging our ability to provide equitable resources to our students.

Our Science (Chemistry, Biology, Physics) and FACS (culinary arts, food science) departments urgently need a consistent ice supply for experiments, sample preparation, and food safety.

We currently rely on time-consuming manual ice trays or costly bagged ice, leading to:

- Lost Instructional Time: Diverted time for ice procurement.

- Compromised Experiment Integrity: Delays or inability to perform temperature-sensitive procedures.

- Reduced Learning Scope: Limits advanced experiments and culinary techniques.

- Increased Costs: Recurring expense of purchasing ice.

- Decreased Efficiency: Lack of essential resources impacts program quality.

Project Goals:

- Provide consistent, reliable ice for all lab activities.

- Maximize instructional time by eliminating ice procurement delays.

- Enable a wider range of temperature-controlled experiments and culinary techniques.

- Enhance lab safety and professionalism.

- Reduce recurring operational costs.

Justification/Impact:

- A dedicated ice machine will significantly impact our programs:

- Enhanced STEM Education: Facilitate accurate exothermic reactions, sample preservation, and thermodynamics studies, fostering deeper understanding and more complex investigations.

- Improved Culinary Arts & Food Science: Crucial for food safety (rapid chilling, cold chain integrity) and culinary techniques (ice baths, chilling dough), providing real-world experience.

- Student Engagement: Equips students with professional lab experience, preparing them for higher education and careers, particularly vital for students from low-income backgrounds who may have fewer opportunities for advanced lab exposure.

- Faculty Efficiency: Allows teachers to focus more on instruction.
