This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a Title I school which integrates students with intellectual disabilities with their able bodied peers. About half of our population have special needs. More than 90% of our school qualifies for free or reduced lunch. My students are in third, fourth, and fifth grade and are diagnosed with Intellectual Disabilities. They learn in a self-contained class. They have difficulties with following directions, staying on-task, and fine motor skills. We missed almost two weeks of school due to Hurricane Irma and are having to restart our year. It has been very upsetting to the students and staff.

My students stay much more focused in their learning while researching earthquake proof building designs online and are in need of a laptop and headphones in order to work with a partner to do this.

My Project

A laptop, mouse, and headphones will allow more of my students access to the Internet in order to look up designs for earthquake proof buildings. The students with help will try to replicate some of the structures in Lego blocks and place them on a base which shakes to demonstrate how sturdy the construction is. They will work together in order to find easy designs to copy in class.

My students need a lightweight laptop computer, wireless mouse, and headphones in order to research designs of earthquake proof buildings which they'll copy using Lego construction blocks in teams thus emphasize cooperation and social skills in the classroom.
