Children explore, observe, question and problem solve through Project Based Learning experiences in our classroom. "If I had influence with the good fairy, I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life." Rachel Carson
Our school is a lively, happy place and visitors feel the positive energy.
More than half of our students live in poverty and receive free or reduced meals. We have the highest number of refugee students in our school district and over 40 languages are spoken in our district. School is an oasis, a haven, where our children have the freedom to test their ideas, collaborate, question, debate, and find solutions. We believe that children need hands-on learning experiences to build their background knowledge. Our intention is for children to learn and be challenged so they may enter our world with knowledge that will allow them to gain access to higher education and good jobs. It is our firm belief that every child deserves
My Project
Hands-on science using live animals allows students to think deeply, keep alive their curiosity, and develop a love for science.
Our students need a science and technology, Animal Studies kit, that will allow them to study three distinct animals: Dwarf African frogs, fiddler crabs, and millipedes.
The children will focus on animal behavior, comparing and contrasting the needs, behaviors, and body structure of each organism. Children will apply what they learn about body structure and habitat to discover how an animal is suited to life in its particular habitat and why most animals would not survive in a habitat with different conditions.
Our students need The Life Cycle of Butterflies kit which will introduce students to the concepts of life cycles by inviting them to investigate one organism-the painted lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) for 8 weeks. As students care for the caterpillars and butterflies, they observe, record, and describe in words and drawings the metamorphosis from caterpillar to chrysalis and from chrysalis to butterfly.
The adult butterflies are released during a school ceremony to which parents and community members are invited.
The Animal Studies kit and The Life Cycle of Butterflies kit provided by Carolina Biological engages students in hands-on science.
Successful students have rich background knowledge that allow them to make connections and apply knowledge to real-life situations. These projects have the potential to inspire our children to become scientists who may solve some of our planet's most pressing issues.
