Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My energetic third graders in the South Bronx love to learn about the world around them! In between state test preparation and without many materials, my class and I have completed two science units so far this year: animals and space. I have never seen my kids so full of questions or so engaged in an activity as they were during our science lessons. Unfortunately, without any hands-on science materials, it can be very difficult for eight and nine year olds to grasp certain scientific concepts. My kids love to touch objects and explore them to understand...it keeps even my most struggling students engaged and excited about our topic. Hands-on activities also make learning accessible to students of all ability levels and strengths.
With all of the focus on math and literacy due to state testing, my school has very few science resources. We have an old set of textbooks, but no hands-on manipulatives to bring the concepts to life. I am requesting a variety of science activity kits that deal with the concepts we still need to investigate this year: matter, earth science, and plants. These kits will allow my students to hold and compare different types of rocks, experiments with various forms of water, and even grow their own plants. These kits will not only help my children understand important science concepts, but it will allow them to explore aspects of the world that are not readily accessible in their urban neighborhood. Please give my kids the chance to really become young scientists! Thank you for your consideration!
