Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our 6th and 7th grade students have very few science lab supplies and no field guides that could be used to observe nature. Can you imagine 35 eager and curious students without lab supplies to carry out science investigations or books to answer their questions?

Our school is a small K-8 public school that emphasizes science and the arts.

Despite this, the 6th and 7th grade classes have almost no science equipment and lab supplies and no field guides. Our students are motivated learners, in fact they are eager, cooperative, and even polite to one another. Frankly, they deserve more than they we are providing them. We are a multicultural school with family backgrounds from around the world. Incomes are generally low. Families are dedicated to the welfare and education of their children. Instruction is project based and special needs students are included in all classes. State test scores are very strong; especially when compared to schools of a similar socio-economic background.

My Project

I have requested supplies and books that will improve earth science lessons for 6th graders and life science for 7th graders. In addition, science lab supplies will serve all science students. In the wish list are grasshoppers, starfish, and frogs for life science students to dissect and dissecting tools for the task. A butterfly habitat will prove popular. A set of prepared slides will serve as an introduction to microscopes. Sixth grade students will be able to conduct various weather related experiments using the rain gauge, barometer, and hygrometer. We have no instruments to weigh materials. The various scales will be a huge improvement in this respect and they will be useful in math lessons too. Our students enjoy observing nature, both in the schoolyard and at the nearby creeks. The binoculars and field guides will help students appreciate and learn more about what they observe.

There are many worthy causes to which to contribute.

I like to think that helping the 35 sixth and seventh graders at our school is as worthy a cause as any that exist. Our students are eager to learn. Having laboratory supplies and field guides and equipment will drastically increase their exposure to investigative science. Thank you for any support you can provide.
