Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
One of the most gratifying aspects of my job is getting the right text into the hands of the right student. In order to make this happen, I need a wide array of resources. Science texts are of the most interesting to students. Help me get these texts into the hands of my students!
I have 64 eager students in my two periods of language arts.
Our school is located in Southeast Los Angeles County. 100% of my students qualify for free lunch and 50% are English Language Learners. They equally enjoy reading independently or as part of an Interactive Read Aloud, where I read the text aloud and lead a class discussion. In addition, they express strong opinions and a sense of compassion through their writing.
My Project
We will use these science magazines in a variety of ways. Some of the articles will tie-in with the California Science Standards, so I will use them to teach the content required by the state. In addition, the Common Core State Standards have a strong emphasis on informational or nonfiction texts. I will use the articles to teach students how to identify text structures and features to help them to better understand the content. I will also use the texts for reading comprehension strategy work, such as lessons on inferring, asking questions, and drawing conclusions. In addition, I will give students an opportunity to buddy read the articles and to explore. They will mostly be used for Language Arts and Science instruction, but they will also have an opportunity to read for pleasure.
If my project is funded, the science magazines will enrich the reading and writing opportunities in my classroom.
While I do have fiction and nonfiction texts in my classroom, they are limited. Many students have already read all of my science texts. These magazines will give students more options to read in the classroom and at home, and it will give us current and high-interest science topics with which to practice reading and writing strategies to make us better equipped scholars.
