Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Great writing begins with great books. A world without great books will not produce great writers in our children.

Many of our kindergarten students lack the resources that will set them up for academic success.

They come into school every day eager to learn something new. We are a Title I school with close to 600 students. The majority of my students are English Language Learners who need additional materials to support learning new vocabulary and skills simultaneously. Many people have said that our school is a hidden treasure and for that reason it can be difficult to locate. Because we are tucked into a small neighborhood, we do not receive much community support to fund classroom needs. Many of our teachers purchase materials independently or seek funding for materials.

My Project

These books will be used as the students learn about and develop the necessary skills for writing nonfiction pieces. We do not currently have the books we need to accompany our new writing program and will need them to meet the varied needs of our students. The students will work through each book with the teacher and see how writers write. What does a good nonfiction piece look like and sound like? They will learn how to write in order to answer questions like these: how should I introduce my reader to my topic, what kinds of details are needed, and specific questions designed for that lesson.

Next year we will have approximately 120 Kindergarten students and we are looking forward to helping our students write using some great books.

We need these books for every Kindergarten classroom. Sharing books is not an option when we are all teaching the same ideas on the same days at the same time. Your donation will bring these books into our classrooms to support the students' goals of becoming proficient writers ready to enter first grade.
