How can 4000 spoons help improve behavior? These materials you are sponsoring will be used by the 925 students at our Title I school, as part of the behavior management program for our cafeteria. After receiving direct instruction on expected behavior, the Golden Spoon Award will be introduced the second week of school. Plastic cups stacked on each of the 48 lunch tables will provide a visual indicator of the students' current behavior. Green cups show their behavior is on track, yellow cups show a warning to correct a specific issue, and white cups represents the need to have a more in-depth conversation with their teacher and start fresh the next day-a blank slate. Tables will earn a green spoon each day they have a green cup at the end of their lunch period. The classroom from each lunch section with the most green spoons at the end of the month will hang a two-foot, golden paper mâché spoon outside their room, be acknowledged on the announcements, have their picture posted on school social media, and participate in a class chosen reward like Lunch and a Show.
At our school, the priority is the personal awareness and increase of social, emotional, and mental health growth for our staff and students.
The Golden Spoon Award is only one aspect of our positive behavior plan that we recreated following Covid and began implementing in earnest last year to achieve that goal. Our data showed significant improvements in the reduction of referrals for behavior overall. Unfortunately, lunch is one area where this remained a challenge. The Golden Spoon was piloted last year by one grade level to great success. By sponsoring these materials, you will allow us to roll out this plan to all of our students.
