Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 7th grade math at Bateman, a Chicago Public School. The school's population is predominately Latino and 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Every year, I teach 90+ general education, bilingual and special education students. The children are a fantastic bunch of kids who deserve the very best education we can offer. I believe that the best education we can offer is motivating, challenging, engaging and enjoyable.
To help achieve that ideal learning environment, I would love to supplement my math curriculum with games involving the skills and content we learn in the 7th grade. These games would be used in centers during unit instruction where small groups of students can explore math concepts together. The games can also be used during student earned free time on Friday afternoons.
Research shows that students are more motivated to learn when they have the opportunity to engage in tasks they consider enjoyable. Games and children are a natural match. I can't think of a better way to support student learning than to incorporate the children's natural love for play and games in the classroom. Thank you for your consideration.
