Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
PVS is located in an urban school district within Rhode Island. Our school provides a safe and caring learning environment for children Pre-K to 5th grade of many different cultural backgrounds. 43% of the students in our school receive special education services and more than 80% receive free or reduced lunch.
In our 1st Grade Inclusion class, we educate and care for children of all abilities, including students with Traumatic Brain Injury, Autism, ADHD, Developmental Delays and Emotional Disturbances.
We do our best to provide a calm and caring learning environment to all of our students on a daily basis. Going to school for some is going to a "safe place" where they are loved and cared for. Our goal for this school year is for each student to thrive to his/her full potential in all areas of development and to advance academically with appropriate supports in place for ALL.
My Project
These family engagement materials are going to encourage our students to continue their learning at home with their families. The engaging math and literacy games are hands on and encourage the children to learn through play. A variety of different levelled materials were selected for this project, from Pre-K to 2, in order to differentiate and meet the needs of our diverse class.
Parents are partners and an important piece to the puzzle to increase student achievement.
Many of our students are English Language learners, where their parents speak a second language at home and they receive supports in school to learn the English language. These learning materials are not only going to help our children develop new skills and reinforce learned concepts, they are going to encourage parent language development, socialisation and parent-child engagement within each household.
Many of our families can not afford books or learning games for their children to play at home because these items are not necessary for living, such as food and shelter. As a result, we have includes a variety of stories in this project, some fictional to entertain and some to inform our families about good health and safety.
In addition to having our students bring the family activities and book bags home, we are going to use the materials for our weekly "Mystery Reader". Parents will come to the school and share a story from the story teller/feltboard kits or present a story from the cultures around the world theme pack. After parents read a multicultural story, we are going to encourage them to share a little information about his/her family culture. This will be great for our English Language Learner parents and a perfect opportunity to build awareness about differences. Exposure and knowledge creates PEACE and acceptance.
