School Uniforms for All!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of us take for granted when we wake up in the morning and choose what we will wear for the day. For most of our students, the decision is made easy because we are a uniform school. However, there is a population in our school that cannot afford what most people consider a basic necessity, their school uniform.

I teach in the District of Columbia at a public middle school.

Although we will be a completely new school this year servicing 6th graders, the students we will be receiving come from our four feeder schools in WARD 4 that have a high number of in-transition/ homeless families. The majority of our students receive a free or reduced-price lunch and there is a population of our students that is not able to get the necessary supplies from home.

The transition to middle school can be challenging as it is and we want our students to be prepared and feel like they are already a part of our school community when they arrive.

My Project

With the population of our families that are struggling financially, uniforms are often lower down on their priority list. There are many students who might frequently come every day without wearing their uniform and in some of these cases there are issues with homelessness, financial difficulties, or trauma. Students who are frequently out of uniform can be easily identified by their peers since we are a uniform school, and this can cause anxiety as a new middle school student.

I would love to be able to create a reserve of uniforms to allow the Wellness Team to be able to pull aside these students and provide them with a uniform.

Breaking down this simple barrier can often set a child up a more successful day because the fear of being identified by their peers as "in need" or at times "homeless" has been removed.
