This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a guidance counselor in a school that is located in a borough of New York City. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Throughout a typical school day, I counsel students as young as five, and as old as fourteen. I work in a Pre-K through eighth-grade school. The students I work with come from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Many of them are new to our country and are just learning the language. Many of them live in single-parent households. Some of them come from families that have one or more parents in the military. In addition to these challenges, many of them have special needs. Despite the many challenges they face, all children deserve to be rewarded for their positive behaviors and effort throughout the school day.

My Project

My school is fortunate enough to have a large schoolyard. However, we do not have a lot of items to keep the students moving and occupied while they are outside!

If the students had more equipment, such as safe balls for a game of catch, or a mini golf set-they would be motivated to move more during their free time!

Not all students enjoy playing basketball, which is currently the only option available in our schoolyard. If my students had more choices, such as a target throwing game or a parachute for play--they would get more exercise during their recess time!
