This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of us don't remember the exact time when we learned to read - when the words on a page ceased being random letters and started making sense. My kindergarten students have just learned to read and it is thrilling for them to look at books and see words that make sense to them!
I teach 19 enthusiastic kindergarten students at a neighborhood school where half of the students are English language learners and more than half receive free or reduced-price lunch.
My students spent the first half of the year working hard to learn the sounds of the letters and how to put these letters together to make words. They are able to read now, and I want to encourage them to practice reading by providing them with entertaining, yet simple, books.
My Project
I have spent a great deal of time at our local public library lately, looking for books that are suitable for beginning readers. Many of the books that are labeled "level 1" or "level a" are still too hard for my kindergarten students. However, I came across these "Step Into Reading" books and they are perfect. The words are big and clear and there aren't too many words on each page. The stories are engaging and interesting, but are simple enough for my students to read. Best of all, many of the stories in this series have familiar characters or themes, which will engage my students even more. I've requested more than 40 different titles. I'd like to have these books available for our reading time at the beginning of the day and also for "check-out" so students can take them home and practice reading them to their families and friends.
One of my main goals in kindergarten is to nurture my students' love for reading.
