My Students

Students in my classroom are discovering ways to broaden their imagination while becoming scientifically literate. I see their eyes open to so many new topics and ways of learning.

My students are full of life and personality.

Each one of them has a unique personality and life experiences that shape how they approach school and learning. Our middle school started in 2001 and expanded to include a high school in 2005. Our student body is 85% African-American, with 85% being eligible for free/reduced-price lunch. In 2002-03, we were named the sixth highest performing school in the entire state of NC out of 2,219 schools. By 2005, 97% of our students were performing at or above grade level according to NC state tests, and from 2009-11, 100% of our high school seniors were accepted to college - 85% of these students will be first generation college graduates. In 2010, our school was named "One of the Best" high schools in America by Newsweek magazine. Our students are guided by the philosophy that "we learn not for school, but for life." We believe education is the most powerful weapon we have to fight for social justice.

My Project

Some of these materials include cross-sections of the heart, body, and brain. These items will let them see what we are talking about from in a 3D model. Also, these models will allow my students to have a hands on experience with concepts that may be difficult to grasp. Furthermore, actual x-ray pictures will allow students to link Science to their everyday lives. Having a connection that they can see, will help students understand why studying Science is so important. Finally, I am also requesting books on experiments. These books will help my students with ways to challenge themselves outside of the classroom. Many of my students are asking for activities to do at home to better see Science. The book of experiments will be used not only in the classroom, but also so that they can continue their work in a fun way at home.

By funding this project you are not only helping me ensure that students truly understand about the body to pass their tests, but also, you are funding their creativity and imagination.

Students will be able to take apart different aspects of the body and see where the items fit back in. My students have shown me that hands on learning is what ensures that the lessons stick.
