What would be the best way to describe my students? My students come from a variety of different lifestyles. My district pulls from nine different zip codes, which range from the upper middle class to significantly below the poverty line. Currently, 93% of my students are on free and reduced-priced lunch. Sadly 47% of them will report homelessness this year. I have students who range from 13 to 15 years old who have been put in very adult situations and roles. Personally, my students are all 8th graders, but when tested, my students range from a 1st grade level of understanding, all the way up to the 10th level of understanding. My building, however, houses 6th, 7th and 8th graders.
With all of their economic and personal hardships, my students, and many of the students that I have had the pleasure of meeting are a true bright light in my day.
Most come into school and have such a positive attitude about life and getting through the day. They truly amaze me. They are funny and smart and not letting their struggles hold them back in life.
My Project
In my district, we are very low income. In a low-income district, there tends to be a lot of struggles for students. One of the biggest struggles for a low-income student is the acquiring of that school supply list that every teacher is asked to create over the summer of what a student will need in order to be successful. This is the case for my district. When I say that they are struggling, I mean they are STRUGGLING. When teachers were asked, besides paper, pens and pencils, what are the 3 items from the school supply list that they felt were most important to have in the students' hands, the resounding answers were: Highlighters, to draw the students' attention to important information; Rulers, to help students connect the dots; and Erasers, to help students learn that it's okay to mistakes and that mistakes can be fixed.
My goal with this project is to create bags of school supplies for the students at the beginning of the year in order to help them be able to successfully transition into their current grade level.
Currently, in my school, there are 465 students enrolled in the building. However, that number does not include the transient population that we see, which could see upwards of 100 students move in or out during the course of the school year. With the supplies requested, I want to create bags for these students too, so that when they enter our building, they have supplies because of so many of them less everything in the moving process. In doing this, I will help to take some of the financial hardships off of the teachers as they are asked to provide the supplies that students asked.
