School Supplies for Significant English Classroom Gains

My students need 150 marble composition notebooks (one per student) to use as journals throughout the year to track their learning and to develop their competence and confidence with writing. My students need 16 packs of highlighters to learn the parts of speech through a color-coded grammar system that has been enormously successful at KIPP Key Academy in DC.

Work hard, get smart! This is our classroom motto. While my 10 graders face enormous obstacles both at home and at the high poverty school they attend in Maryland, they are immensely driven and hardworking individuals. My students come into class each and EVERY day ready to learn and improve their life prospects. Beyond the horrific daily obstacles of poverty (hunger, drug abuse, violence, transient living situations) many of my students face concrete barriers to learning inside the classroom such as reading and writing levels that are anywhere from two to five grade levels below 10th grade and instruction that is tailored on or above grade level. The disconnect between my students’ grade level and the instruction they receive in school can frequently be blamed for disengagement, low test scores, chronic misbehavior, and absences. In order to combat this, in our classroom my students receive instruction at their grade level, they build confidence, and then they quickly move upward and onward towards grade level. This year my 150+ 10th graders will take Maryland’s High School Assessment (HSA). Because many of my students read and write below grade level, we will be working enormously hard to bring them up to grade level, increase their confidence in reading and writing, and ensure that they pass this graduation-pending test! In order to do this there are two crucial classroom materials that will help pave the way to success. The first are marble composition notebooks. Through generous contributions, each of my 150+ students will be able to have their own marble composition notebook. These notebooks will serve a multitude of purposes. Students will track their learning and development by composing meta-cognitive journal entries, which discuss their growing reading and writing competency. Students will also use the journal for informal free-writing to build confidence with their writing. Additionally, my 10th graders will develop their composition skills by drafting paragraphs, thesis statements, and eventually a five-paragraph essay in the journals. At the end of the year students will be able to take these journals home as concrete evidence of the hard work and success they have earned! The second vital school supply for my students are multi-colored highlighters. My students struggle enormously with the grammar component of the HSA. Through an extremely successful color-coding system my students will master the first major stumbling block in grammar, the parts of speech. The highlighters serve as color flags and each part of speech receives a narrative solidifying the role, position, and function of the parts of speech. Using the highlighters will drive my student’s success both on the HSA and in their writing. Your generous contribution will help my students gain the confidence, knowledge and skills that our failing education system has denied my students for so many years. As 10th graders my students should be able to read and write with ease and confidence. My students should be able to take the HSA with comfort and the peace of mind that comes with feeling prepared. Imagine the opportunity and power that you can provide all through a few highlighters and composition notebooks!
