My Students

Our high school brings the beautiful diversity of Tacoma together with the rigorous academic work comparable to any private high school in our city. We believe that all students can be successful, including our student body, which is 75% low-income and 75% students of color.

I teach Advanced Placement Literature and Composition to a group of students that reflects the diversity of our high school.

I believe that all students should be exposed to rigorous curriculum and that we have the tools to help them achieve at high levels.

My Project

At the beginning of each school year, students go home with supply lists for six different classes; this can seem overwhelming for many of our families who struggle financially.

These basic school supplies -- folders, notebooks, notecards -- will help level the playing field for our students and will knock down barriers that more financially affluent schools rarely encounter.

These supplies will guarantee that students are ready on day one, ready to analyze rigorous texts, create arguments that make a difference in their world and help them to tell their own story. Having this "kit" of supplies ready when students walk in will communicate: "You matter. Let's get learning."

Each color of folder corresponds to one of our major units of study -- I print a matching booklet of readings for each unit. My students have found this method to be an effective way of organizing their materials and encouraged me to use it again this year!

And this year, I'm also asking for two sticky-note white board sheets to use to resurface two large tables in our classroom. These will be collaborative spaces where we can have in-the-moment chalk-talk discussions or students can sit down together to map out their next essay.
