This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a high-poverty school, I have the opportunity to work with a group of twenty-six students from a variety of backgrounds who all contribute unique skills and experiences to our classroom.

Our class is made up of a multilingual and global community of learners, with over half the class speaking a language other than English at home.

These bright, innovative, spunky students are enthusiastic readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and historians. They deserve the best education in the world!

My Project

Sixty percent of my students begin the school year below grade level. One of the biggest challenges in 5th grade is encouraging students to keep reading when the books at their level are too "little" or "babyish." No 5th grader wants to read "for fun" when the only books at their level are about 5 year olds who look nothing like them.

These new books will provide my lower readers with interesting and relatable content to practice their reading and accelerate their levels quickly.

The books cover a range of genres and cultures, ensuring that my students have books that are both mirrors and windows into other worlds. The additional supplies, such as Post-Its, clipboards, paper, and markers will help foster their ability to write about their reading, a skill directly connected to comprehension.

All children deserve the chance to fall in love with a great book. Thank you for supporting my students!
