My Project

Student attendance and behavior can be a difficult topic to discuss in alternative education, especially when recognizing that the majority of our students have responsibilities beyond the walls of a classroom. For our students, school attendance and maintaining a "positive attitude" is not always a necessity for survival. One of the ways that I, as the school social worker, have strived to improve student attendance and behavior is through free school incentive programs. This program is about rewarding, not punishing. Students are given fake currency called "McGinnis Money" (named after our wonderful principal) for daily attendance, improved behavior, and goal setting/completion. This money can also be earned through showing kindness, empathy and passion in the classroom toward other students and/or staff. I have had the privilege of observing this program this past school year, and I am happy to share that I observed a dramatic increase in attendance, behavior and school culture, all for the chance to earn incentives.

I have seen how simple things such as sweet treats can impact a student's desire to improve!

With the upcoming school year I am asking for support with collecting new incentive items, specifically snacks, so that this program may continue to support our students. The snacks were individually selected by our students, and are items that they have either never had access to, or wish they could take home with them after school. One aspect of our incentive program is ensuring that students continue to feel encouraged to improve their behavior and attendance in order to receive snacks and/or prizes, by having them select what they wish to see in the "reward store".

I encourage you to be apart of something that not only improves the school atmosphere, but will also give students a fresh start to the 2025-2026 school year!
