This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some think they don't like to read, but I think that is like saying they don't enjoy eating. Almost everyone relishes some food--pizza, chocolate cake, sushi, fried chicken, glazed donuts. But if all you were given to eat was oatmeal and okra, you would probably say you didn't like to eat, too.

I am the school librarian at a huge California urban school.

Many of my students think they detest books. They stay away from the library and when they have to venture inside its doors, they groan. But I am committed to changing their perceptions of reading and of libraries.

My Project

When you offer people delicious food---enchiladas, cheeseburgers, cookies & cream icecream---they enjoy eating. But if you were to force them to eat only broccoli, liver, and radishes, they would think they hated eating. The same thing happens with books. Teens think they abhor reading because they are used to challenging, tedious, irrelevant-seeming classics studied in English classes. I want to reprogram their perceptions of books by offering them compelling novels about issues that are meaningful to young people and in a language they can competently comprehend.

I hope you are just as committed to helping young people discover the magic of reading and will contribute to this proposal.
