This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When students tell me they hate reading, I tell them it is like someone saying they hate eating because all they ever ate was broccoli and didn't know about the existence of double cheese burgers, french fries drowning in ketchup, and chocolate fudge sundaes swimming in whipped cream and sprinkles.

I am the high school librarian in an impoverished neighborhood where most of our neighborhood students live in dilapidated apartments and motels.

These students do not have access to books, do not own a library card, have not grown up in families who read and value the written word. Therefore, the majority of my students do not know the possible delight that reading can bring since all of their reading has been akin to gnawing on broccoli.

My Project

It is my hope that being able to provide compelling books about issues that are relevant and intriguing to my teens, literature that is suspenseful and delightfully horrific, novels by trusted authors that teens are devouring these days, I will be able to inspire more of my students to discover the enchantment of reading. It just takes one book, one perfectly engrossing book, to change a child's life, to encourage a child to visit the library, to transform a child into a literary believer!

Won't you help me spread the message that reading is enthralling!

I can only send this message if I have the books to prove it, and I can only stock the books with your help. Once children find one book that doesn't taste like broccoli, I can hook them! It is then that I can encourage them to try another one and then another. And suddenly, they have devoured so many calories of literature to begin to make up for their malnourished literary spirits. Please help me feed their brains!
