School Counselor Seeks Tools for Helping Students Learn Regulation Strategies

Help me give my students books, games, and other tools to help them to learn coping skills and calming strategies for self-regulation, so that they can be successful in the classroom setting!

My Students

I am a counselor in a large inner-city school in Wichita, KS. I get to teach lessons in the classroom weekly to all students in K through 2nd grades. Many of these students ride a bus from all over the city to come to our Magnet school. It is my hope that this year our students will get to learn more about mental health wellness. Emotion regulation is a huge part of learning. We use it to recognize the emotions in ourselves and others and to be able to find strategies and skills to regulate our emotions when we are feeling upset to the point of distracting others. If we cannot regulate our emotions, it is difficult to sit still in class, participate in group activities, and be able to focus.

Some of these students have never had experiences with being able to regulate their emotions effectively.

Some of them have had beautiful childhood experiences, while others have had sadness, loss, and deprivation. My goal is to help ALL students to experience success in and outside of their classrooms. I want to help ALL students to find healthy ways to learn and live!

My Project

The books, games, and tools that are requested in this project will be used during classroom lessons to teach students about their emotions and how to help to regulate their emotions so that they can be in the classroom with their peers and be able to focus and learn with others. They will also be used with smaller groups of students who have been identified to have more needs than their peers so that they can learn the skills to be successful. These items will only be used in a school-based classroom setting with students aged Pre-K to 5th grade.

These books, games, and tools are items that would never be able to be purchased with regular funding, as social/emotional learning is not usually a priority in most school settings.

However, I feel that it is extremely important, as students who are in an emotionally-charged state cannot learn and need to learn ways to "calm their brains" before they are able to participate in the classroom with their peers.
