Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a special education teacher with 30 kids between 5th and 6th grade. Our school is in a low income area but we have very high expectations for our students! My students come to school every day to work hard and love being there each day. We have had a subscription to Scholastic SuperStem in the past and my students love to read through it and use the articles for our writing topics. In Arizona, our students take the state test for science in 5th grade so the bulk of my students will take a state exam in this subject at the end of the year. Last year, the students thrived reading the magazines, writing about the topics, watching videos, and completing experiments.

Using these magazines, I am able to show them a fun side to STEM along with all the possibilities for jobs in the future.

My students may not always do well in every subject that teaches straight from a book, but they do well with hands on activities so the STEM subjects are fantastic for their confidence and they are much more engaged and happy to come to school each day!
