My Students

In my third grade classroom, I teach two blocks of Reading and Writing, and I also teach Social Studies. It is often difficult to find non-fiction reading materials that are interesting and current for younger readers.

I teach at a school in the northern suburbs of Atlanta.

Our school is somewhat diverse, and about one fourth of our students are on free or reduced price lunch. We are also a special education center, which means we have about one third of our school that is considered special ed. I will teach two blocks of Reading to third graders, and I will teach Social Studies to half of the third graders, while another teacher will teach Science to the students. One of my blocks will be taught with a team teacher where our third grade special ed students will be included. Our school has been described as a "Norman Rockwell" type community school. We have a great history of success. Our students are very accepting of those who might learn differently.

My Project

Students in third grade are beginning to read for learning instead of learning to read. Boys at this age really enjoy non-fiction materials, and girls usually choose fiction materials. Scholastic News is an exciting and interesting way to bring current events and non-fiction materials to both boys and girls at our school. It provides articles in Science, Social Studies, and Health that are applicable to third graders. The students look forward to our weekly Scholastic News Magazine.

Having the Scholastic News Magazine will provide non-fiction materials and current events for my third graders to read.

This provides interesting reading for my students as they transition from learning to read to reading to learn.
