My Students

As a teacher in a low income/high poverty area I see firsthand how students are impacted by lack of reading materials. Many of the students in my classroom have never been to a public library or a bookstore to select books. The students have not had the opportunity and advantage of being exposed to books and literature at a young age.

The students in my 2nd grade class have become avid readers and soak up every story and book that is read to them.

Story time in our classroom is the favorite activity of the day and the students get so excited when a new book is introduced. Their vocabulary is blooming with new words and they are becoming experts on authors, illustrators, and genres.

When it is reading time, the students can not wait to get their reading bags and settle into a comfy spot in the room to begin reading. Some choose to read alone, while others read with a partner, sharing the story and discussing along the way. It is not only their favorite time of day, but mine as well. It makes me so happy to see my students immersed in reading.

My Project

Scholastic News will give my students the text material they need to become informed about the world around them. Many of my students have not been exposed to quality reading materials, and I am always searching for ways to engage them in different types of reading. Through this project, my students would have access to nonfiction magazines filled with current events. These magazines would provide the starting point for classroom discussions, role playing, letter writing, and engaging conversations with their classmates. In the end, reading and learning from these magazines would help create a more informed classroom of students who care about real issues in our world.

With a classroom subscription to Scholastic News, my students will build confidence in their ability to read, while making real world connections.

For children that may never leave their neighborhood or town, this is a great opportunity to be exposed to events and issues that will provide them with a greater understanding of the world. My students are very eager to become better readers and learn new things. This magazine subscription is a perfect way to encourage and promote their love of learning.

Many of my students do not have access to reading material at home. Through the use of Scholastic News magazines we can fill that void by sending home the magazines after we have read and studied them in class. My students will benefit greatly from rereading these magazines at home with their families and sharing their learning with others.
