This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learn to love current events and history-in-the-making! This is what I am trying to instill in my students. Scholastic News has always been a great tool to help students feel this way.

My students are among some of the most fascinating I have ever worked with.

They are 100% ESL (and comprise 65% of the school population) and have a huge range of personalities, from fun to serious and everything in between. They have voracious appetites for learning and are always ready to try something new! My students attend a public school in New Jersey. The school is located in a very high poverty and high crime neighborhood. Virtually all of the students I teach were born in another country and have come here with their families for a better life. Financial struggles are common in most of their households and a strong education is key for lifelong success.

My Project

Scholastic News has always been an exciting and engaging learning tool to help students feel connected to the world outside of their communities. Right now, our beloved New Jersey is in the news due to Hurricane Sandy. I want students to understand the impact that sharing of information of events as they occur helps world citizens feel more connected to one another. Scholastic News can help us achieve that goal.

I cannot state enough just how important understanding the historical world, global citizens and current events are to helping us all feel interconnected.

Scholastic News is one of the few, but powerful, tools that exist for children to make this connection.
