My Students

I teach 6th grade at a large Illinois elementary school. My students are from low-income families and are eligible for free lunch. As an educator I want to instill my love for discovery and inquiry in my students.

Unfortunately our textbooks are outdated and not very motivating to my students.

Additionally, because of further cuts in our budget, we are unable to purchase math resources. In conjunction with budget cuts, we were told by the school board to expect classes of 35 students, further cutting into our meager resources. Most of my students do not have computers with Internet access at home, or parents to take them to the library to find current math articles. I would love to be able to have a learning aid that would allow me to teach my students math using real world applications.

My Project

I currently subscribe to Scholastic MATH. My students argue about which one will get to read the magazines 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. If you fund my project my students will not have to argue over who will read the magazine first because they will each have their own copy. Scholastic MATH magazine makes math meaningful and accessible to students by applying core math concepts to high-interest, real-world topics. There is also a digital component that my students will be able to take advantage of. The digital aspect features learning activities such as videos, games and leveled practice problems. Using the “Online-only Math News” articles, my students will solve a different challenge math question each week about geometry, percents, algebra, operations and statistics. My students are eager to learn interesting solutions to mathematical problems specifically geared toward middle school children.

This project is also important because minorities and women are under-represented in the field of mathematics.

By introducing my students to real-world mathematic applications, and make problem solving fun, perhaps one day they will pursue a career in mathematics. My students and I will be greatly appreciative if you are able to help them each receive their own Scholastic MATH Magazine.
